Health Information Management Students

Name: Tanisha Newsom
School: Saint Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri
Degree: Health Information Management

Why did you choose Health Information Technology or Health Information Administration?

I chose the health information administration because I always wanted to work in the health care industry but I didn’t want to become a doctor or a nurse. This is a demanding field and there are a lot of job opportunities. I also chose this field because HIM is a broad field so there are so many places where you can work.

What classes did you find the most interesting and why?

I liked medical legal because it was interesting to hear about the legal issues and cases in health care.

When do you anticipate to graduate? Or, when did you graduate?

I graduated May 19, 2007.

If you have graduated, what was your first job? Please describe your position.

I am currently working as a coder in an area hospital

Are there areas in HIM that are of particular interest to you?

I like health care fraud, consultant, and project management. I’m also interested in the project management, helping hospitals and clinics implement the electronic medical record.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Working with health care fraud, being a project manager or working as a health information management director.
